Konark Dance Festival

Konark Dance and Music Festival is being observed from 19th Feb to 23th Feb 2017.

Lying on the cost of Bay Of Bengal, Konark is a small town in the district of Puri, in the state of Odisha, India. It is the site where the 13th century Sun Temple is built with black granite during the reign of Narasimhadeva-I. Also know as the Black Pagoda, the temple is a World Heritage. The architecture of the temple is an example of Oriya architecture of the Ganga dynasty. It is said that the temple was constructed by the son of Lord Krishna, Samba, As per the legend , it is said that Samba , cursed by his father Krishna, was afflicted by leprosy. After 12 years of relentless penance, Simba was cured by , the Sun God, Surya, in honour of which he built the magnificent Konark Sun Temple. The temple is shaped as a colossal chariot drawn by seven horses with twelve wheels that carries Surya, the sun god, across heavens.

Apart form the Sun Temple, visitors can also enjoy the exquisite Chandrabhaga beach and relax in the resorts situated near it. Another reason for tourist to visit Konark is to join in the celebration of the Konark Dance Festival, in the month of December. Konark Dance Festival- is an annual festival that serve as a mix of classical and folk dances. It is a treat to watch intricate and beautiful classical dancers in their festive mood to show their love and respect to the Sun Temple Konark. There are also several smaller shrines situated around the Sun Temple.The occasion is embellished with Bharatnatyam dance, Kathak dance, Manipuri dance as well as Chau dance and dancers from across India assemble to showcase their artistic talent to the spectators who have interest in the classical dance forms of India.Famous dance artists of National and International repute participate and perform in the festival. Dances, musicians, vocalists, Gurus, students, critics and general art lovers come together to listen,see, and interact with each other. As the evening approaches visitors eagerly wait for the festival to begin that is held in open air. The open air stage creates a divine atmosphere. Apart from appreciating the amazing dances, visitors have also have the opportunity to take a stroll around the crafts mela. An array of multifarious exquisite handmade articles are available at the mela. Foodies also have the choice of delicious local cuisines to satisfy their appetite.
